The Hard Hat Café Site Tour is a bi-monthly series to watch the progressive development of a project currently under construction.

Join us on Saturday, March 16th and tour this historic house in San Carlos in its current stage of framing construction. The first-floor steel frames will be in place and the shotcrete will be complete, strengthening the unreinforced masonry walls. Attendees will be able to start to see the layout of the rooms, as reviewed in the plans last session.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.     Explore methods and construction techniques related to shotcrete application on unreinforced masonry walls in a historic renovation project.
2.    Identify effective masonry stabilization and reconstruction methods used during construction and as part of the final structure.
3.    Assess integration and use of steel framing to preserve the original character of the house and to achieve code compliance and structural efficiency.
4.    Review the updated programming and layout and alternative uses of the spaces to address the functional needs, safety and well being of the owners.

San Carlos History Museum Presentation

Join us at 1:30 on Saturday, March 16th for a presentation at the San Carlos History Museum, where we will learn more about the history of the planning and development of San Carlos. As a continuation of the current Hard Hat Café tour, the presentation will also share more historical use and operations on the property, when owned by the Black Mountain Water Company in 1932.  

Learning Objectives:

1.  Understand the historical evolution of urban planning in San Carlos from its inception to the present day, including key milestones, planning strategies, and development patterns that have shaped the city’s landscape.
2. Explore the historical significance of the property formerly owned by the Black Mountain Water Company, delving into the company’s role in the community, its impact on local development, and how it contributed to the overall growth of San Carlos.
3. Evaluate the social and economic impact of the services provided by the Black Mountain Water Company on the local community, considering how access to water resources influenced the growth and sustainability of San Carlos over the years.
4. Discuss the preservation efforts and challenges associated with maintaining the historical integrity of the home previously owned by the Black Mountain Water Company owners, exploring the intersection of historical preservation, urban development, and community identity in the context of San Carlos.
