181 Fremont

181 Fremont is a slender, mixed-use tower located in San Francisco’s bustling East Cut neighborhood. Designed for public use, the skyscraper’s two lobbies—a street-level lobby and an elevated park lobby—welcome and enliven visitors with captivating artwork, comfortable spaces, and retail services. Each lobby aligns with public outdoor space: a poetry plaza on the ground level and the Salesforce Park at the 7th level.

Oriented perpendicular to the street, the main lobby runs the length of the building and wraps around and behind the building core. This plan creates a sense of discovery for visitors as they experience the gallery-like setting. Highlighted by the lighting and expansive glazing, the structural height and openness of the lobby add to the drama of the space. A series of suspended poems in Murano glass make an immediate impression for visitors entering from Fremont Street. This artwork invites people in with its shimmering and gently moving sentence tendrils. Drawing visitors deeper into the space, Duna—a 5,640 pound marble sculpture—floats lightly on her plinth with a strong, quiet presence. Aided by a classic neutral color palette, the structure and artwork are the focal points: they work together to slow passersby down and encourage the public to wander in.

As one of only two buildings connecting directly to Salesforce Park, the 7th level park lobby was designed as a hospitality environment with a destination of its own: Andytown Coffee Roasters. It is a place that surprises and rewards visitors like a modern speakeasy. The comfy furnishings and warm, natural textures make it a family-room for the Park with a uniquely San Francisco vibe akin to a boutique hotel lobby. Amidst the Park’s rich greenery, bistro seating and cozy lounge areas offer people a place to work or take a break with friends.
