Project Description
Confronted with a rather stale and dilapidated 1960s-era office building which had poor circulation, run-down building systems and non-existent accessibility, we asked ourselves:
How can we use design to not only breathe new life into the antiquated shell, but also use architecture as an integral tool to help with image, iconography, branding and identity for the building owner and its future tenants?
Inspired by the mathematical beauty and precision of hyperbolic paraboloids, we started with a simple yet elegant concept that seemed to crystallize form and function together.
Using a simple vertical wood screen as both sun screen and privacy filter at the ground level offices, we were able to provide passive cooling, privacy and filtering from pedestrian traffic where it is needed the most.
At the entry, the simplicity of the wood slats subtly starts to shift: warping and folding both inward and upward, the screen simultaneously hides and rises behind a floating glass curtain wall and creates an understated yet dynamic sculpture and entryway, both attracting curiosity and inviting entry into the deep floor plan of the building.
Through this entry threshold a second surprise unfolds for visitors from the street, where a new light-filled garden courtyard is hidden at the center of the building. Blue sky and greenery are re-introduced at the heart of the office building, promoting not just fresh air, views and natural daylight, but also encouraging chance encounters, conversation and collaboration.
