Design Charrette: An Introduction
The word charrette comes from the French word for “cart.” At the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in 19th-century France, architecture students raced against tight deadlines to complete their designs. As the deadline hit, a cart—the “charrette”—rolled through to collect their final boards, symbolizing the intense, last-minute push of creativity.
Fast forward to 1982: a group of San Mateo County architects organized a design charrette to kick off a local downtown improvement effort. That event led to the founding of AIASMC. Since then, we’ve led over 18 design charrettes across the Peninsula, helping shape vibrant communities.
Curious to learn more or want to get involved? Join our in-person workshop on May 14th, hosted by Board veterans Dianna, John, Ellis, Kevin, and Noemi. Whether you’re new or need a refresher, you’ll explore the “Why, What, and How” of design charrettes—and the impact of great design.
Presenters:
Dianne R. Whitaker, 2004 AIASMC President
Ellis A. Schoichet, 2007 AIASMC President
John Stewart, 2010 AIASMC President
Kevin Norman, 2009 AIASMC President
Noemi K. Avram, 2005 AIASMC President
Discussions will include:
- What is a Charrette? Many newer members have not participated in one. It’s the most fun Architects have.
- How many Charrettes has the Chapter put on?
- What preparations happen before a Charrette?
- What happens at a Charrette?
- A presentation is made to the City Council and Planning Commission after the Charrette.
- What topics are good for future Charrettes? All Chapter members are encouraged to submit ideas and contact officials in their communities.
- Why Charrettes are good for the community and the Chapter.
The AIASMC Scholarship Awards will be presented at the start of the evening.
