The California Architecture Foundation (CAF) has launched Architecture by the Book: https://calarchfoundation.org/about_abtb_public/ a new education program that helps children discover architecture by bringing AIA architects of all ages and professional levels into local classrooms and communities, introducing architecture and design concepts through a book reading, presentation, and hands-on activity. Many of the lessons are centered around architects of diversity, and a primary goal of the program is to share the profession with underrepresented schools and communities.

We are thrilled to be partnering with an incredible organization, Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAFG): https://www.scientificadventures.org/ , to integrate architecture into their established afterschool STEM (soon to be STEAM) program!

Each Architecture by the Book© lesson consists of four elements, downloadable on a free PDF “lesson card” located on the CAF website:

(1) the title and author of the book featuring a specific architect or architectural topic;
(2) an inspiring PDF presentation that expands on the book, further exploring the architect and architectural design concepts;
(3) a hands-on activity that engages children in a creative, simple activity using recycled materials and items already in the classroom;
(4) most importantly, a local AIA architect volunteer who mentors and leads the lesson—connecting and engaging with students or community members.

SAFG has selected two lessons on Zaha Hadid, created by Lionakis: https://calarchfoundation.org/learn-about-architect-zaha-hadid/ and https://calarchfoundation.org/learn-about-architect-zaha-hadid-lesson-for-younger-students/. The lessons will be featured at 21 school sites in the Bay Area, impacting 800 girls!

Would you consider volunteering to lead a lesson afterschool in October, November or December? If so, please review this sign up document for locations, dates and times: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OUgPD0tMoNi8zRRVXOR9rDWAChnkdAiKag3kGjTE-jo/edit?gid=0#gid=0. A joint CAF / SAFG volunteer orientation will be held to familiarize volunteers with both organizations and the lessons.

We appreciate your consideration and hope you will participate as a role model and inspiration to young girls!
