John Lum Architecture was honored with a 2022 Builder magazine Builder Choice Design Award — a Grand Award in the Renovations and Additions category — for its Maritime Modern Makeover project located in Sausalito. The annual program celebrates innovation in residential design, and awards are issued based on design excellence, sustainability, floor plan efficiency, and use of materials. JLA, with interior design by NicoleHollis, reworked a spec-level Mediterranean into a design that quietly fits its spectacular bay-side setting. The project team stripped the 1940s structure to its studs and rebuilt with environmentally-conscious materials designed to weather. Approximately 80% of the exterior structure was preserved. A re-conceptualized open plan maximizes daylighting and natural ventilation, reducing energy loads. The front hall operable skylight, tempered by a wood sunscreen, provides natural cooling. The rear was scaled back to accentuate views while creating additional outdoor space. And the entire house was wrapped with a raised garden terrace.
Congratulations to John and everyone at John Lum Architecture! John is an AIASMC Board Member.
