Request for Letters of Interest – Executive Architect Selection Monterey Museum of Art Capital Improvement Project- Monterey, California
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The primary focus of the project will be the renovation of the Pacific Street building, the incorporation of the Miller Adobe into the project program, and the innovative re-use of the existing sculpture park and landscape connecting the two buildings. Subject to budgetary and programmatic constraints, some work may take place at La Mirada
Programmatic requirements include spaces for collections and exhibitions, education and public programs, welcome center and visitor amenities, collection storage, administration, and building services. The existing interior configuration and building systems of the 22,000 GSF Pacific Street facility are inadequate for the needs of a twenty first century museum. The intent of this project is to renew the entire building’s systems and fully address the Museum’s space needs and broader community aspirations. It is anticipated that the Miller Adobe (2,500 square feet) will augment the Pacific Street building as part of the program. As currently envisioned, work at La Mirada would be limited to providing storage space not accommodated by the Pacific Street building.
PROJECT GOALS
MMA hopes to create a place that impacts the community’s museum experience:
• A place of wonder, delight, and creativity (active experiences that create joy)
• A theater of experiences (lots of points of stimulation, different modalities of experience)
• A place for visitors to reflect and recharge (contemplative spaces and quiet places)
• A place to discover your own creative impulses (active, accessible creation stations)
• A beacon in the community (to be known as a haven for free expression and inclusion)
• A model of accessible, sustainable, and inspiring museum design
MMA wishes to explore opportunities to incorporate sustainable design, environmental stewardship, and energy efficiency into our project.
