Sustainable San Mateo County (SSMC) is now accepting nominations for its 2023 awards program, which honors those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to sustainable practices. Self-nominations are welcome. Applications must be received by November 18. SSMC will recognize the awardees at its 24th annual Awards Celebration during the spring of 2023. 

Sustainability Award nominations may be made in five categories: individuals, nonprofits, businesses, education institutions and government agencies. In addition, SSMC is accepting nominations for its 21st annual Green Building Award, which it cosponsors with the American Institute of Architects San Mateo County Chapter. This award is given to a project in the county that promotes green, sustainable design and construction.

Peninsula Clean Energy is also announcing its 2023 All-Electric Awards program today, which recognizes builders, property owners and design teams on the forefront of building electrification in San Mateo County. At the 2022 Awards Celebration, SSMC honored awardees Each Green Corner, a nonprofit that teaches people of all ages to create sustainable gardens that supply produce to food-insecure community members; Kalimah Salahuddin, a tireless advocate for affordable housing who was instrumental in persuading the Jefferson Union High School District to provide stable housing for teachers; and Seamless Bay Area, a nonprofit working to transform the Bay Area’s fragmented public transit systems into a unified, equitable system. The Ruth Peterson Award, established in memory of a dedicated SSMC leader, was presented to longtime SSMC member and volunteer Robert Whitehair. The Green Building Award was presented to the Marshall Medical Offices, located on Kaiser Permanente’s medical center campus in Redwood City.
