The final tour of the Hard Hat Café was an exciting conclusion to AIASMC’s bi-monthly series, and the opportunity to witness the progress of the historic home remodeling in San Carlos. The Architect for the home was Stewart Associates, led by Principal John Stewart, whose extensive career in residential architecture also includes being a longtime contributing AIASMC member and Board Member.

The sense of excitement at the completion of the project was palpable as attendees explored the beautifully finished home. Highlights included marble fireplace surrounds, an impressive new kitchen, and a thoughtful addition. Participants had the chance to engage with the Architect and homeowner, also the builder and general contractor, discussing the project’s evolution.

The decision to create a pitched ceiling rather than a flat one, paired with decorative trusses transformed the dining room into a beautiful space. Another memorable element was the incorporation of antique wooden doors concealing the walk-in closet in the primary suite.

Beyond giving new life to this beautiful historical home, the designers have artfully incorporated the latest sustainable and resilient design features into the remodeling project. New solar PVs were installed at the flat area between the pitch roofs (hidden from the view), with back-up battery to support an all-electric HVAC system and in-floor radiant heating in the bathrooms. Existing bricks from the old interior were collected and reused as pavers at the outdoor patios. The architect-builder team also focused on the wildfire harding of the new roof and exterior finishes.

We understand all the effort and collaboration that goes into bringing a vision to life. This tour offered a glimpse into the creative process, the stories, decisions, and craftsmanship that shape an architectural project. Events like this allow you to connect, learn, and find inspiration. If you missed this one, please join us at future AIASMC tours and events!
